Somewhere between Q1 earnings calls and the summer conference circuit, a quiet power struggle has reportedly broken out in the SMS marketing space — and the flashpoint, according to multiple sources close to the matter, is TikTok Shop.
Attentive, the Newark-based SMS and email platform that raised $470 million at a $10 billion valuation back in 2021, is allegedly in late-stage conversations with TikTok Shop’s commerce partnerships team to build a native SMS re-engagement layer directly inside TikTok Shop’s seller dashboard. If the integration ships as described, brands running TikTok Shop storefronts would be able to trigger Attentive SMS flows — abandoned cart nudges, post-purchase sequences, loyalty win-backs — without ever leaving TikTok’s native interface.
Sources familiar with the discussions, who requested anonymity because the talks are unconfirmed, describe the integration as a potential “closed-loop retention engine” that TikTok Shop is dangling in front of top-spending brands as a reason to consolidate ad and CRM spend inside its ecosystem.
What Exactly Is Attentive Allegedly Building With TikTok Shop?
The unconfirmed integration reportedly goes beyond a simple API handshake. According to one agency operator who says they were briefed during an Attentive enterprise review in late May, the proposed feature set includes:
- First-party SMS opt-in capture embedded directly into TikTok Shop checkout flows
- Triggered abandoned cart SMS sequences firing within 15 minutes of cart drop on TikTok Shop storefronts
- Post-purchase upsell SMS powered by TikTok’s own product recommendation engine, not just Attentive’s native AI
- A shared attribution dashboard giving brands visibility into TikTok-sourced SMS revenue without third-party pixel dependency
“The pitch they gave us was essentially: why rely on Klaviyo to close the loop on TikTok traffic when TikTok and Attentive can do it natively?” the agency operator said, speaking on background. “If that’s real, it’s genuinely disruptive.”
Attentive declined to comment on any partnership discussions. TikTok Shop’s PR team did not respond to a request for comment by publication time.
Why Are Klaviyo’s Agency Partners Reportedly Nervous?
The alleged Attentive-TikTok Shop play lands at an awkward moment for Klaviyo. The Boston-based platform, which went public in September 2023, has been leaning hard into its Shopify-native positioning and its own AI segmentation features — but sources say its TikTok Shop integration has lagged behind merchant expectations.
“Klaviyo’s TikTok Shop connector is functional but it’s basically a webhook setup that requires developer time to maintain,” said one senior retention strategist at a mid-market DTC agency who manages Klaviyo accounts for roughly 40 brands. “If Attentive ships something that’s truly native and frictionless, you’re going to see brands doing $5 million to $20 million on TikTok Shop start asking hard questions about their email and SMS stack.”
“Klaviyo built their moat on Shopify. The threat is that TikTok Shop is building a second moat — and they’re inviting Attentive inside the walls.” — Retention strategist at a DTC-focused agency, speaking anonymously
Klaviyo’s own public communications have emphasized platform agnosticism, but reportedly several Gold-tier agency partners received private messaging from Klaviyo’s partner team in late May urging them to “reaffirm the value of owned channel independence” with clients — language that at least two sources interpreted as a defensive response to the Attentive-TikTok Shop rumors circulating on agency Slack channels and at the eTail East pre-conference networking events.
Klaviyo did not respond to a request for comment on its TikTok Shop roadmap or its partner communications.
Is Brian Long Still Steering Attentive’s Enterprise Push?
The rumored TikTok Shop deal, if real, would represent a significant strategic bet under Attentive CEO Brian Long, who co-founded the company and has reportedly been under pressure from investors to justify the platform’s premium pricing against a crowded field that now includes Klaviyo SMS, Postscript, and Yotpo’s SMS product.
Sources close to Attentive’s enterprise sales motion say Long has been personally involved in at least two of the platform’s largest DTC renewals in 2026, a level of CEO engagement that insiders describe as unusual. “Brian’s in deals he wouldn’t have been in two years ago,” one former Attentive employee said. “That tells you something about the competitive pressure they’re feeling.”
Attentive’s pricing — which sources say can run $3,000 to $15,000 per month for mid-market DTC brands — has become a recurring flashpoint. Several brands that Ecommerce Times spoke to off the record said they had received aggressive counter-proposals from Postscript and Klaviyo SMS during renewal cycles in Q1 2026, with discounts reportedly in the 25% to 40% range.
“Attentive is the most powerful SMS tool in the market. It’s also the most expensive, and their competitors know exactly when your contract is up.” — Director of growth at a DTC apparel brand, speaking anonymously
What Does This Mean for DTC Brands Running TikTok Shop?
For operators actively scaling on TikTok Shop — where gross merchandise volume reportedly crossed $30 billion in the US in 2025 — the alleged Attentive integration raises both an opportunity and a strategic question.
The opportunity is straightforward: tighter SMS recovery on TikTok Shop carts, which sources say convert at materially lower rates than Shopify carts due to the platform’s in-app checkout friction. Several operators have reported TikTok Shop abandoned cart rates of 70% or higher, compared to 60% to 65% on Shopify, making SMS recovery potentially high-value.
The strategic question is thornier. If Attentive’s TikTok Shop SMS flows are powered partly by TikTok’s own data infrastructure, brands would potentially be trading first-party data independence for conversion lift. That’s a tradeoff that not every DTC operator will be comfortable making, particularly those who have spent the last three years building owned-channel stacks specifically to reduce platform dependency.
- Brands doing under $2 million on TikTok Shop may not see enough volume for the integration to matter operationally
- Brands doing $10 million or more on TikTok Shop could see meaningful lift — but face data governance questions
- Agency operators managing multiple brands would need to evaluate whether a TikTok-native SMS flow creates auditability issues for clients
- Brands on Klaviyo exclusively would face a real migration decision if the Attentive integration proves to be competitively superior
Are Other SMS Players Scrambling to Respond?
Postscript, the Shopify-focused SMS platform backed by Greylock, is allegedly aware of the Attentive-TikTok Shop discussions and has reportedly accelerated its own TikTok Shop integration roadmap. Sources close to Postscript’s product team say an update is planned for Q3 2026, though no official announcement has been made. Postscript CEO Adam Turner did not respond to a request for comment.
Yotpo’s SMS product, which the company has been aggressively bundling with its loyalty and reviews suite, is also reportedly in conversations with TikTok Shop’s commerce team — though sources describe those talks as earlier-stage and less specific than the alleged Attentive discussions.
What’s clear is that TikTok Shop’s commerce partnerships team is actively playing SMS platforms against each other to secure the best possible native integration terms, a negotiating posture that one agency source described as “very deliberate and very effective.”
“TikTok Shop doesn’t need to build its own SMS tool. They just need one of the incumbents to build it for them — and they’re going to get that deal done on their terms.” — E-commerce consultant who advises TikTok Shop sellers, speaking anonymously
When Might Brands See Official Confirmation?
Multiple sources point to Attentive’s annual customer summit, historically held in the fall, as a likely venue for any official announcement — assuming the TikTok Shop partnership is real and progresses on its alleged timeline. Others suggest a quieter launch via Attentive’s partner portal could come as early as late Q3 2026, giving the platform a head start before the holiday season when TikTok Shop GMV historically spikes.
For now, brands and agencies are left to triangulate from second-hand briefings and conference hallway conversations. What is not in dispute is the underlying commercial logic: TikTok Shop’s scale makes it the most important new acquisition channel for DTC brands in 2026, and whoever owns the SMS recovery layer on top of that channel owns a significant piece of the retention stack. Attentive knows it. Klaviyo knows it. And apparently, so does TikTok Shop.
